Two Georgetown residents were arrested and have been charged in the death of a Georgetown man.

Danny Smith, 62, was found dead in his home on New Street in Georgetown late in the evening of June 17 due to a suspected drug overdose, officials said.

The Georgetown Police Department arrested Kevin Blake Tucker, 22, and Maribeth Denny, 38, and charged both with involuntary manslaughter, a third-degree felony, and corrupting another with drugs, a second-degree felony.

Tucker is listed as an acquaintance of Smith and Denny is listed as his girlfriend, according to the police report filed by the GPD.

Both Tucker and Denny were arraigned at the Brown County Adult Detention Center and are being held there while legal proceedings begin. Georgetown police are conducting an investigation, and the case could then be forwarded to the Brown County Prosecutor’s Office, who could seek grand jury indictments.

According to the police report, officers on the scene at Smith’s home allegedly recovered a methamphetamine pipe, two cell phones, a Honeywell safe, a clear tube and a Dexmerc quart bottle with used needles.

The report adds that Smith allegedly died from a narcotic overdose, and that the narcotics were provided by other individuals. The specific narcotic in use was not disclosed.

Smith’s body was first examined by Brown County Coroner Dr. Judith Varnau, but was then sent to the Montgomery County Coroner’s office to conduct an autopsy. According to Varnau, the results of the autopsy won’t be available for a minimum of two months due to a back log.

If Tucker and Denny are found guilty, they could face up to 13 years in prison in addition to fines.

Shortly before 8 p.m. on June 17, a 9-1-1 call was made from an address on New Street in Georgetown, according to the incident run sheet provided by the Brown County Communications Center via a public records request.

According to the 9-1-1 call also provided by the center, the caller stated there was an unconscious male in the house and that he had been unconscious for the past hour.

Around the time the 9-1-1 call was placed, Smith stopped breathing, according to the run sheet.

According to the 9-1-1 call, the communications center staff member directed Denny, who was allegedly on the scene, to perform chest compressions and CPR while Georgetown police and the Georgetown life squad were dispatched to the location, according to the run sheet.

A Georgetown police unit arrived at the residence at 8:03 p.m. and seconds later, a life squad unit arrived as well, according to the run sheet.

The coroner was notified of the incident at 8:17 p.m. When the coroner saw the body by 9 p.m., Smith was listed as dead on arrival, according to the run sheet.

According to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office jail’s website, Tucker was booked into jail at 12:26 a.m. on June 18, and Denny was booked at 1:02 a.m.
